Frequently asked questions:
AeroProtect liquid and film products that protect aircraft interiors during work

Click or touch questions to reveal answers.

Q. What are the benefits of the AeroProtect film versus the liquid?

A. The different products were created for different uses. The liquid, when painted or sprayed on, dries to a flexible membrane that can be peeled back and reapplied.

This same product is available in rolls of film to be peeled from a light backing which can be used for applications where painting or spraying are not practical, such as with previously installed aircraft cabin items where adjacent fixtures would be vulnerable to overspray and spills.

Additional AeroProtect films with light adhesives are remarkably tough and resilient, often used to protect carpet and fabrics inside the plane.

Q. Can I apply multiple coats of AeroProtect for thicker, more durable protection?

A. Yes. The more coats of AeroProtect, the thicker the protection. As an average, OFPSI recommends a coating of 8 to 10 mil wet. Anything less than 3 mil may be difficult to peel off. The heavier the coating, the longer AeroProtect will take to dry.

Experiment with different materials to establish your own protocol. That said, disregarding any required inspections, AeroProtect was developed for use as a once and done application. The liquid can be applied to a cabinet on the shop floor, transported, installed and removed upon delivery to the customer. It can be peeled back and replaced with full protection intact (leaving no residue).

Q. Does applied AeroProtect permit the off-gassing required to stabilize and cure substrates and veneers with layers of finishes and sealants?

A. Yes. AeroProtect Pro formula allows finishes to “breathe” and prevents the mottled appearance resulting from impermeable protections. AeroProtect acts as a “skin membrane” allowing the finished surface underneath to off-gas, dry and cure. It’s a natural process that if not permitted, results in ghosting or haloing patterns in final product. The process can go on for months, depending upon materials and coatings.

Q. Does AeroProtect require mixing or dilution prior to use?

A. No. It is delivered in ready mixed form. Simply stir the liquid product with moderate agitation as prescribed on the label.

Q. How long should we wait before spraying AeroProtect on finished cabinets?

A. AeroProtect recommends following your organization’s established and defined curing process. For some cabinet manufacturers, that period is approximately a week. Durable but gas-permeable AeroProtect allows the cabinet’s finish to off-gas and stabilize.

Q. How is AeroProtect superior to the paper and tape method we use now?

A. AeroProtect can be applied more quickly as it is painted or sprayed on surfaces. It’s far more durable than the papers used in the conventional process. You know from experience that paper and tape have to be continually replaced during a project. AeroProtect was designed to be applied once. Sections can be peeled away and replaced without loss of protection. Workers can even write on AeroProtect without consequence. Better protection with less rework.

Q. How is AeroProtect Pro Plus better for covering windows mirrors and Plexiglas cabinet doors than the solution we use now?

A. Spray-on protection is far more efficient than cutting adhesive panels or masking with tape, for both application and removal. There are no patterns to cut and no trace of residue when peeled off.

AeroProtect Pro Plus liquid spray protects polycarbonates such as windows and mirrors without binding to the material it covers.

Traditional protection methods often used adhesives. Adhesives can trap static electricity that can transfer to workers who come in contact with sensitive electronics. Enough static charge can be developed to irreparably damage a touch screen, for example.

The AeroProtect membrane adheres via a system of tiny air pockets. The pockets behave as micro “suction cups.” AeroProtect allows static to dissipate.

Q. What kind of sprayer should I use to apply AeroProtect liquid?

airless-sprayerA. We recommend a (dedicated) quality airless handheld sprayer. An airless sprayer affords precise control of spray pressure, promotes an even coat, resists clogging and clears clogs more easily. Airless sprayers come in a variety of models with different size motors and tips.

Q. What kind of warranty does AeroProtect offer?

A. Because there are so many variables in materials and techniques, AeroProtect must limit any claim to the original price paid for the product. From the AeroProtect label: “As workmanship, weather, construction equipment, quality of other materials and other variables affecting results are all beyond our control, OFPSI does not make nor does it authorize any agent or representative to make, and EXPRESSLY DISCLAIMS ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY AND WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR ANY OTHER WARRANTY CONCERNING THIS MATERIAL. This material conforms to OFPSI’s quality control standards. Any liability whatsoever of this product is limited to the purchaser’s cost of the product itself.”
